Before spring showers take their toll on your home, assess your roof to see what damages it may have endured over the winter months:
Roof and flashing: Make sure the roof does not leak (Of course, you may have already found this out the hard way!). If it does, check that the roof flashing around the chimney does not have any gaps or openings for water to penetrate and replace any broken shingles. To prevent future damage, keep tree branches away from your roof.
Chimney: If your bricks are loose or missing mortar, have them tuck pointed to prevent leakage and structural failure.
Gutters and Downspouts: Clean and flush your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause paint failure, leaks, wood rot and sagging gutters. Improper downspout outlets can lead to water in your basement and cracked foundation walls. Make sure the downspout outlet drains away from the house and that the ground is sloped away from the house, too.
